Total Ministry Health Inc.

Our Approach

According to statistics compiled by Dr. Richard A. Murphy of Maranatha Life : 1,500 pastors leave the ministry each month due to moral failure, spiritual burnout, or contention in their churches, 50% of pastors’ marriages end in divorce, 50% of pastors say they would leave the ministry if they could because of discouragement, 80% of Bible school and seminary graduates will leave the ministry within the first five years, and 70% of pastors feel grossly underpaid. These same statistics tell us that 80% of pastors’ wives feel that their spouse is overworked, 80% feel unappreciated and left out by the church, and 80% of adult children of pastors surveyed have had to seek professional help for depression. As a result of the deteriorating state of the pastor, 7,000 churches close on average each year. Pastors are struggling in ministry and life and often have nowhere to turn to seek help, healing, and restoration.

Total Ministry Health has discovered that most ministry leaders when experiencing burnout or ministry fatigue cannot determine the main factor or factors causing the feeling of burnout. As a result, they cannot make the necessary changes to allow them to thrive once again in ministry. If a ministry leader cannot identify the root cause of ministry burnout and correct the issues, they often become one of 1,500 people who leave the ministry each month. Conversely, if a ministry leader is able to define the cause of their burnout and receive counsel, they often return to thriving ministry. There are very few ministry assessment tools to help a ministry leader or ministry coach determine the necessary steps needed for a person to return to good ministry health. Our TMH Assessment provides a proven comprehensive scale and suggested steps to improve ministry health and reduce the trend of ministry drop out

Our Story

Total Ministry Health, Inc founder and director, Dr. Scott Ream, has spent years studying the damaging effects of transitions, crisis, and burnout among ministry leaders. During his doctoral studies, Dr. Ream authored the Ream Pastoral Health Scale to measure the health and potential burnout among pastors in ministry. This assessment tool was validated using the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Total Ministry Health Inc. exclusively uses this assessment tool to help a pastor determine their overall health or potential burnout. This assessment also measures 15 leading factors of health and burnout among ministry leaders. Once the cause of burnout is defined a ministry leader individually or with the help of a ministry coach or mentor can return to a thriving ministry. Dr. Ream’s concern for the church and the pastors who serve is the driving force behind his investment in Total Ministry Health Inc. Total Ministry Health Inc always starts with the assessment. After the assessment, Total Ministry Health offers coaching and mentoring services to help ministry leaders return to good ministry health. Total Ministry Health Inc. is committed to training proven ministry leaders, middle judicatories, regional, district, and national directors to use the Total Ministry Health Assessment (formally known as the Ream Pastoral Health Scale) to direct ministry leaders, families, and churches to greater health and ministry effectiveness.
